JOE ALEXANDER

Owner
Bedroom Suck Records
Web: bedroomsuckrecords.com
Country: AUST
Joe Alexander is the long-time CEO of Bedroom Suck Records, a once Brisbane, now Melbourne based independent record label aimed at fostering creative activity and building strong music communities. He began life as a musician in Brisbane's hilly inner suburbs, drumming for bands like Per Purpose, Kitchen's Floor and Slug Guts. Many of these stints gave him an oppourtunity to tour overseas, where he crashed on numerous floors and couches and slowly started filling his address book with names, phone numbers and email addresses. This has now developed into the extensive network that Joe utilises to run his own independent label. Being constantly inspired by the sheer expanse of good music in Australia and internationally, the label seemed a natural conclusion. It is ultimately the people behind the music that inspire Joe; the smiling faces and incredible minds at work. Joe (a.k.a 'Guiseppe' or 'Big Boss') continues to play music, still spending many months of the year touring; only this time with new bands - Terrible Truths, Scott & Charlene's Wedding, and Free Time, to name a few. His label is now firmly rooted in the Melbourne music community, and has come to include management and booking services for many of his artists. It is considered an important incubator of Australian talent by his international contemporaries, and Bedroom Suck have continued to work with partner labels in the UK and US. Last year, Joe attended and spoke at both the BIGSOUND music conference in Brisbane and A2IM's Indie Week in New York, as well as AMIN's Release conference for 2015-16. He hopes to do more of the same in the years to come.

RICHARD MOFFAT

Music Booker
Falls Festival & Groovin’ The Moo
Web: http://fallsfestival.com
Country: AUSTRALIA
Melbourne-based Richard – Rich to his friends – got his first job booking bands in pubs at 17, when, legally, he couldn’t even be in them. His band played the back room at a Melbourne venue on a Wednesday night to 82 payers. Feeling pretty chuffed that he’d got so many people to a mid-week show, Rich got in touch with a friend – another booker – borrowed his phone book and started making calls. The next day, he went back to the pub, told the owner he wanted the job booking bands, the owner said “OK mate”, and the rest is history. Until recently, Rich booked several Melbourne pubs and clubs, including: Evelyn Hotel, Punters Club, Corner Hotel, Public Bar, Northcote Social Club, East Brunswick Club, Shebeen, 170 Russell and Newtown Social Club (NSW). In the early 2000s, he started booking and programming festivals, which include: St Kilda Festival, Queenscliff, Falls Festival, Southbound, Pushover, Groovin’ the Moo, Parklife, West Coast Blues & Roots, Northwest Festival, Splendour and The Plot. Rich has booked early tours for the White Stripes, Blink-182, QOTSA and Beck at venues, including the first ever Australian show by The Pixies; at festivals he has booked Kings of Leon, Lorde, the Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, Weird Al Yankovic, The Strokes, The Roots, Public Enemy, TV on the Radio, Black Keys, Alt-J, Arctic Monkeys and many more. When he’s not booking festival shows, you’ll find Rich making epic playlists, listening to 70s slow jams and looking for the next interesting project to sink his teeth into.

Things that take up Tim Price’s brainspace and time: Australian heavy / alternative / oz prog music mid-90s to now and perhaps at times over zealously spruiking them; an encyclopedic knowledge of Star Wars, James Bond movies, DC comic books, cartoons and TV shows; hitting up and putting on shows; hanging with his wife; drinking good coffee and beer / bourbon; and getting good barbershop haircuts. SHAKES

7.20pm - 7.40pm
Whammy Bar
A throwback to when garage bands used to actually make music for fun, Shakes brand of beat-era bass lines, fuzzy guitars and classic rock'n'roll drums is effortlessly cool and carefree.
For the band's first offering, the Tambourine Girls EP, featuring the debut single 'Hole In Your Pocket' which found its way into indie charts across the country, the songs were jammed out and recorded live in singer/guitarist Alex Wildwood's home studio by the beach in Mount Maunganui.

The new single, Strange Tides – mixed by Steven Schram (San Cisco, Paul Kelly) and mastered by Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, and The Shins) – was created using a cheap toy piano at a bach overlooking Manu Bay in Raglan. The sound fluctuates between all-out rock, to hazy and eccentric indie-pop, drawing comparisons with The Black Keys, Weezer, The Strokes and Kurt Vile. Playing live across the North Island with bands like Racing, Shakes delivers infectious melodies and a toe- tapping groove. With Strange Tides hitting the airwaves in July and a new EP set for release in late 2016, Shakes is making a beeline for your playlist this year.

Shakes is: Alex Wildwood (vocals/guitar), Patch Patrick (drums), Adam McNeilly (guitar) and Chris Miller (bass).

Wine Cellar
"Tami Neilson is one of the most exciting artists in country music today. She’s bringing to country music what acts like Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings have brought to R&B. " -Jonathan Keefe, Country Universe, USA

With a soulful voice straight from the golden age of country and rockabilly music, Tami Neilson has been described as "A red-hot honky-tonker, somewhere between Patsy Cline and Wanda Jackson with perhaps just a little bit of Peggy Lee sophistication.” (-Nick Bollinger, NZ National Radio)

Singing her heart out along endless roads and stages, from her days as a young girl in Canada touring with the Neilson Family band, opening for the likes of Johnny Cash, to her full blossoming in New Zealand as a formidable talent in her own right, Tami Neilson has won the Tui Award for each of her past four albums.

In 2014, Tami was also awarded the APRA Silver Scroll, New Zealand's most prestigious music award for excellence in songwriting, for her song “Walk (Back to Your Arms)”, as well as “Best Female Artist” at the National Country Music Awards and APRA’s “Best Country Song” at the NZ Country Music Awards. The release of her explosive album “Dynamite!” received rave reviews in MOJO, The Guardian (named “Top 10 Best Country Music Album”) and climbed to #1 on the NZ Music Charts. The 5 Star review in the NZ Herald claimed “This world-class album is a major statement from an artist at the top of her lyrical and vocal game.”

Now, just 18 months after “Dynamite!”, this prolific artist has released her follow-up album, “Don’t Be Afraid” to critical acclaim, debuting on the NZ Album Charts and the Independent Music Charts at #1, proving that the powerhouse that is Tami Neilson is a force to be reckoned with.

SACHI

9.40pm - 10.00pm
Whammy Backroom
Picking up co-signs from the likes of Diplo, Zane Lowe, Vince Stapes along with major international and local support from Complex, BBC Radio 1, Beats1, Triple-J, HillyDilly, Fashion Quarterly, SNIFFERS, George FM, ZM, and The Edge SACHI are fresh and already making a dent.

Nick Chrisp and Will Thomas make up the duo and at both just 18 years of age, this is just the beginning of their story. Both born in Auckland the pair met in primary school playing in bands before beginning to create electronic music from the age of 13 or 14. Since their early beginnings SACHI developed to craft their new EP ‘Lunch with Bianca’ which was released on July 1st 2016 and climbed to #1 on the iTunes Electronic chart. Containing the hit single ‘No More’ which was the #1 testing song on George FM (New Zealand’s #1 Dance/Alternative Radio) making it one of the first songs to achieve that status since the likes of Lorde and Broods. Also on the EP are singles ‘Hold On’ and ‘South Central’ feat Duckwrth which were premiered on Diplo’s BBC Radio 1 show and Zane Lowe’s Apple Music Beats 1 radio shows respectively.

Recorded between their bedrooms, Red Bull Studios Auckland, and OWSLA's studio in LA, ‘Lunch with Bianca’ blends genres, delivering the signature SACHI sound whilst combining electronic and hip-hop. With features from L.A native Duckwrth who is currently amidst shows with Anderson Paak., and rising Onehunga artist INF after dominating the NZ hip hop charts with a #1 record feat. Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, and more. Prior to the release of ‘Lunch with Bianca’ SACHI released a remix of ‘Teenage Craze’ for UK’s KLOE which went to #1 on NZ’s Spotify Viral Chart, opened for Rudimental at Vector Arena, and performed at Gisborne’s famous Rhythm & Vines New Years Festival. Receiving rave reviews from George FM as they classed them “one of the best sets from a local act at the festival”, their live set is something you want to be full immersed in sonically and visually.

This is the start of what will be an exciting journey for SACHI as they continue to release music and play shows, keep your eyes and ears peeled.

OPENSIDE

10.40pm - 11.00pm
Whammy Backroom
Openside’s debut "Worth It" crashed onto the airwaves in May with a barrage of high energy hooks and subversive lyrical smarts. The track from Auckland pop punkers OPENSIDE was quickly making these youngsters talked about as the freshest local band debut of the year.

Produced and written at Golden Age with Josh Fountain (Thomston, Kidz In Space etc) and Jaden Parkes (Goodnight Nurse, Kids of 88) and mixed by Rich Bryan (Stan Walker, Babysitters Circus) at Big Pop, this one had smash written all over its devilishly smiling face.

Openside have since been picking up more attention for their smart cover releases of “Lean On” (Major Lazer) and “Style” (Taylor Swift) as well as a rapturously received set with 21 Pilots in Auckland.

The band has recently signed to Warner Music and their next track “Branches” hits the airwaves in March to be followed by an EP.

Openside are:
Possum Plows (vox)
PJ Shepherd (gtr)
Harry Carter (bass)
George Powell (drums)
